How Does Botox Cosmetic Work?

Your Golden State Dermatology practitioner will inject Botox Cosmetic into specific muscles. Botox Cosmetic then helps block signals from the nerves to the muscles.

Blocking these signals causes them to relax and soften any wrinkles in that area. Each Botox Cosmetic treatment is customized to the patient and depends on factors like how deep and severe the wrinkles are and what areas will be treated.

After you’ve received treatment, it usually takes several days to start noticing the effects of Botox Cosmetic and up to two weeks to see the full results. Because it is a temporary treatment, results last 3-4 months on average before you’ll need your next one.

With maintenance, if you continue receiving Botox Cosmetic, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will look diminished and be less noticeable. However, maintaining the results of Botox Cosmetic is not required or necessary. If you choose not to maintain your results, your facial movements and the fine lines and wrinkles will begin to return as they did before you began using Botox Cosmetic.

What Is the Difference Between Botox Cosmetic and Fillers?

Two treatments often confused with each other are dermal fillers and Botox Cosmetic. Although they are both injectable treatments with cosmetic benefits for wrinkles, they are not the same.

Botox Cosmetic relaxes your muscles to help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on your face. Botox Cosmetic does this by reducing the amount of repetitions of facial expressions that cause lines and wrinkles. But fillers don’t affect facial muscles at all.

Instead, dermal fillers add volume to fill in wrinkles and lines and can be used to fill in areas that look sunken due to the natural aging process. As skin ages, it loses its elasticity, volume, and ability to bounce back, which is where dermal fillers come in.
